Audio/Visual Character References (Scenes/Clips from Vikings)

I've gathered a few scenes from youtube to use for my own reference while writing, and figured I'd post it so everyone else can get a short, quick and dirty idea of what your character is seeing/hearing when interacting with Ivar, since both his voice and mannerisms are not entirely normal (and then I added a few just because.)

SPOILERS through Vikings season 5A )

    CHARACTER INFORMATION

    Character Name: Ivar Ragnarsson
    Canon: Vikings
Canonpoint: End of episode 9 of season 5A. (Before engaging Lagertha's troops in the final battle for Kattegat.)
    Character Age: 18

Appearance: Ivar will appear as he does in canon as he is already human! Like this.

    Background/History: Here!

Strengths: Ivar's most notable strength is his intelligence, which in the show mostly manifests as an impressive mastery of (medieval) battle strategy and tactics, as well as an innate understanding of and knack for interpersonal power-plays. Growing up in a society that he was physically incapable of integrating into trained him to be observant of human behavior, and of the ways it can be purposefully manipulated in order to ensure his survival where physically he might not be able to. He became even better at manipulation after his father made him promise to use being underestimated for his disability to his advantage, something he had previously mostly balked at on account of his pride and desire to be seen as an equal by the people around him.

Ivar is an incredibly determined individual. He is highly motivated and ambitious, and while he will have occasional teenage-appropriate slips of self-pity, he puts most of his not-inconsiderable energy into succeeding despite the way his own society assumes he can't. He learned how to handle weapons and fight (to the point of actively being a good fighter despite his inability to walk) and hunt and do all manner of other things expected of viking men alongside his brothers who can all use their legs, and inserts himself into plenty of physically dangerous situations (including full-scale battles) instead of hanging back if he wants to get something done. He speaks up over people in positions of authority if he's got better ideas than they're bringing to the table, and in general spends most of his screentime clawing his way into power one way or the other.

Ivar is unpredictable. His unique position as one of viking society's very few (to his knowledge, only) cripples allowed to live past infancy (due to his mother's intervention and his family's general affluence so that his condition wasn't an impossible strain on their resources) gives him a perspective that almost no one else can match or has ever considered. He tends to come at problems from an odd angle that gives him an advantage over everyone who thinks more conventionally around him, which he uses to his to gain both social and military advantages over the course of the show.

Weaknesses: For all of his intelligence, Ivar is incredibly mentally and emotionally unstable. When he was growing up, Ivar's mother literally (literally!!!) let him get away with murder, and as a result of both that and of the way he was isolated due to his inability to move around on his own/interact with anyone else in his formative years he basically never developed any social/moral boundaries. He actively lacks empathy and also has some deep, intense anger issues, suffering from something close to rage blackouts when pushed far enough, which is something about himself he once admitted to being troubled by and wanting to change. Unfortunately for literally everyone else, his father's advice on the matter (without anger, you would be nothing) drove him to embrace that flaw rather than work on overcoming or controlling it, even when it began to absolutely consume his life... even when it caused him to snap and murder his own brother Sigurd over an insult to their dead mother, driving a huge wedge between himself and his remaining family.

He is also manipulative to a point that goes far beyond the need to survive and actively impedes his ability to form meaningful bonds with people, even family. In general, he has difficulty treating other people as fellow humans deserving of respect and consideration, because in his experience, no one treats him that way either. To him, nearly everybody is just a plaything, to be maneuvered about on the slightest whim so Ivar can have whatever he wants. Surely, it's only fair!

He has a very real issue with bloodlust, and fascination with pain and death that goes above and beyond even the scope of the notoriously violent Viking culture. When out on the battlefield or put in a situation where there is a lot of blood and death that gets his adrenaline pumping, he has a history of snapping into psychotic frenzies where he claims to be unkillable and doesn't seem to feel either fear or pain. He loves watching people die and becomes unhealthily obsessed with people who are particularly good at killing, to the point that he held an enemy warrior captive and occasionally let him loose around his own men partially because he loved watching him fight so much.

Last but most glaring is Ivar's intense insecurity. Due to the way he grew up and how he was treated by the society around him, Ivar has a bad habit of flying completely and utterly off the handle when his insecurities (generally related to his masculinity or perceived lack thereof due to his disabilities) are brought up and prodded in any way. He is very, very easy to manipulate through his insecurities, whether to drive him to do something stupid in anger/an effort to prove himself or to baffle him with acts of kindness and/or treating him like a person who has things to contribute in general.

Fatal Flaw: Ivar's fatal flaw is his terrible anger. Once he forms a grudge it is almost impossible for him to drop it, even for his own health or safety. He burns with so much hatred all the time that he drives himself mad with it and makes himself miserable, as well as driving away everyone else in his life who is even a smidgen more level-headed than he is.
Driving Force: Ivar is driven by his need to prove himself. In a culture like the Vikings had, this manifests in an ambition to make a name for himself and become famous (famous meaning to become a part of the Sagas, viking legends passed on verbally about great warriors, heroes, villains and gods.) Being born crippled into a society where fierce strength, independence and bravery are valued above all else, Ivar has wanted nothing more all his life to be remembered by history, especially for some reason other than being crippled.

Patron: Jupiter/Zeus. Ivar fits all of the negatives of the Jupiter house (he is impulsive, easily jealous, hypocritical and viciously moody), as well as a positive or two (he's unpredictable, confident in his own abilities and plans, and law-abiding in the sense that Viking law is terribly accepting of his particular brand of violent lashing out.)

    GAME INFORMATION

Setting Suitability: Warring is just about the only thing Ivar actively seeks out and enjoys, and even if these gods aren't the ones he knows and trusts... well, a good time is a good time, right? The polytheistic nature of the game will be familiar enough to him as to make him feel right at home, and I'd like to be able to get him to the point of contributing to the efforts tactically and not just physically. While his older brothers still treat him as a kid occasionally, Ivar has been his society's age of majority for years now and generally thinks and acts as an adult in his society. He has participated in war before, as well as sexual situations, so there won't be anything in the game that he hasn't already dealt with in his canon.

backtagging | I am all about it!
    threadhopping | Go for it!
fourthwalling | Recognizing Ivar the Boneless as a historical figure/from the Sagas is alright, but not specifically as a character in a tv show, please.
offensive subjects | Blanket warning for mentions of slavery, raping and pillaging, extreme violent acts including but not limited to warfare and medieval methods of torture, religious bloodletting etc etc which are all accepted parts of Viking society. Ivar has no moral compunctions concerning any of those things, so he might bring them up in casual conversation/think about them in the meta narrative. HMU if you need me to avoid mentions of any of these. As for myself, no content warnings necessary for anything.

    IC

first impressions | See here for clips of what Ivar looks/sounds like!
physical contact | Ivar is used to being manhandled around on account of not being able to walk in a time way before wheelchairs and the like. In general, touching isn't going to set him off.
flirting | He will absolutely short circuit, and have no idea how to actually flirt in return. But go for it!
romance | Personally, I'm open to it. It will definitely go to dark places, though. Ivar is violent, obsessive, a little turned on by murder/torture and he has some Intense trust issues that he takes out on literally everyone around him. He is not a stable man emotionally, mentally or physically. If any of that appeals (I mean, what a catch, right?) hmu, friends.
fighting | Definitely, whether alongside or against other characters! Ivar is unable to use his legs, but he still joins battles in his canon, and absolutely loves to fight and kill. He is a baseline human trained to fight with weapons from the middle ages, and would be above average at grappling because of his freakish upper body strength from using his arms to walk all his life. He is also very good with throwing weapons/bow and arrow. And swords, but uhh... again, he can't use his legs so he'd only be an actual threat with one in very specific circumstances.
injuries or death | Minor injuries, yes. Major/life altering injuries or death, contact me through PM or at [plurk.com profile] boned to plot through first. I'm not opposed, necessarily!
mind reading/control | Go for it, he has no defenses. His mind is Not a pretty place to be, though.
magic | Also go for it, again he has no defenses or resistances against magic.

    RELATIONSHIPS
    ABOUT NAME
Ivar the Boneless, so named because he was born with a disease that rendered his leg bones extremely brittle (then unrecognized, but now called osteogenesis imperfecta), is the youngest of Ragnar Lothbrok's six (known) children, the forth son of Aslaug. He was born a viking prince, became the commander of the Great Heathen Army... and in very near future, will take his father's former throne and name himself King of Kattegat (for however long that lasts.)

    PERSONALITY
Ivar is wicked, vicious, and terribly insecure: both completely mad and a genius. He is, in the words of his actor, "a drama queen." He is also extremely intelligent, a shockingly charismatic and ambitious leader, good at predicting the behavior of other people and even better at using all of that to manipulate them. His strategic mind is frequently lauded by other characters, and he has a real knack for inspiring fear in his enemies and fervor in his followers, despite his lack of ability to use his legs. He has a mean, sarcastic sense of humor, a deep reverence for the Norse gods and magic, a sadistic streak a mile wide, and a very terrible, very real fascination with pain and death.

He is also an embarrassingly easy sell for literally any act of kindness or intimacy. The moment someone treats him gently, it is so foreign to him that it acts as a shock to his system and he turns into useless mush, at least for a few seconds before he can catch himself. The first girl to flatter him of her own volition, to call him special and not flinch in the face of his physical deformity, he freed from slavery immediately. When his father tells him for the first time that he was wrong to try and kill Ivar the day he was born, he is shocked and moved (and actually stops insulting him for a whole like 20 seconds, amazing.) Because of his overwhelming insecurity and the almost insurmountable harshness of life as a cripple in a viking warrior society, he is incredibly susceptible to the stroking of his ego, or to people treating him with dignity instead of pity or derision over the state of his legs.

When he was growing up, Ivar's mother literally (literally!!!) let him get away with murder, and as a result of both that and of the way he was isolated due to his inability to move around on his own/interact with anyone else in his formative years he basically never developed any social/moral boundaries. He has deep, intense anger issues, suffering from something close to rage blackouts when pushed far enough, which is a shortcoming he once admitted to being troubled by and wanting to change. Unfortunately for literally everyone else, his father's advice on the matter (without anger, you would be nothing) drove him to embrace that flaw in himself rather than work on overcoming or controlling it, even when it began to absolutely consume his life... even when it caused him to snap and murder his own brother Sigurd over an insult to their dead mother. In general, he has some difficulty treating other people as fellow humans deserving of respect and consideration, because in his experience, no one treats him that way either. To him, nearly everybody is just a plaything, to be maneuvered about on the slightest whim so Ivar can have whatever he wants. Surely, it's only fair.

A big contributor to Ivar's unstable moods is the fact that he is in an unending, constant state of physical pain due to his disability. He has become accustomed to it and doesn't wail constantly like he did when he was a baby, but he still cries out when moved suddenly, and can't walk with his crutches without grunting in effort or pain at nearly every step. Still, his pride and his desire to be seen as more than a cripple make him gravitate towards walking with his crude crutches and leg bracers as often as possible, even though he moves more steadily while crawling, and more quickly when he asks other people to carry him.

He is intensely lonely, but that is as much his own doing as it is the fault of the harsh society he was born into. There are very few people Ivar ever loved in a way that anyone on the outside looking in might actually recognize as love, his mother and Floki... and perhaps his father, but that relationship was Very Complicated all the way up until its end (he himself never called it love, only admiration.) He absolutely does love his brothers though, make no mistake, but he also hates them, is bitterly jealous of them, and views any negative reaction they might have to him — whether he pushed them to that point purposefully (usually) or not (much less likely) — as a terrible betrayal, holding them to an impossible standard that he certainly wouldn't pass if the shoe was on the other foot.

Ivar inherited his father's vicious cunning and extremely asshole tendencies, but none of his accompanying mercy. His mother's haughtiness and piety, but not her grace. There was no exaggeration in Aslaug's prophecy that she would bear Ragnar a monster, but beneath that he is also just a damaged, lonely boy who is desperate to be loved, even if he isn't terribly good at returning it in kind.l

    FLAWS
The Door was right on in claiming Ivar the Boneless, who might actually be Chaotic Evil incarnate. Even when compared to a society as unrepentently violent as Viking society, he's excessively cruel and vicious. He has occasional bloodlust-induced psychotic frenzies (during which he believes himself immortal, and appears not to feel pain or fear), and in fact his first murder dates all the way back to a tantrum he threw at age six when another child his age was bullying him, so he slammed the blade of his axe into the boy's skull (why did he have a sharpened axe at the age of six? Honestly, vikings.) He later attempted to and then actually murdered his own brother Sigurd during an argument, a symptom of his quickness to anger and the ease with which people can provoke him to act extremely stupidly if they know which buttons to push. During his first storyline as a teenager, he spends a few episodes personally terrorizing a slave girl because he was angry and ashamed over his own impotence, in an attempt to frighten her into never telling anyone else about his shortcoming. He is shown to be the most unrelentingly vengeful of all his brothers especially over the deaths of their parents (the others can be reasoned with and see a bigger picture, but not Ivar: even if he appears to be thinking things over, he is really only biding his time.) He's more interested in raiding and conquering than in building settlements or ensuring the prosperity of his people, and aggressively seeks positions of power even though he's only interested in the fame that comes with titles rather than being a ruler, good or otherwise. He holds grudges absolutely past the point of sanity, and he never comes quite so alive or looks anywhere near as happy at any other point in the show as he does while watching people die. He's like, not a good guy, in general.
